Purpose
The purpose of the Food Security & Sustainability Program is to address the growing crisis of food insecurity among low-income families and vulnerable populations in Canada by creating a sustainable, community-driven food redistribution and education model. This program seeks to transform surplus food from farms, grocery stores, and food suppliers into reliable nourishment for those in need while simultaneously reducing food waste and promoting environmental stewardship.
Food insecurity affects millions of Canadians, disproportionately impacting racialized communities, newcomers, seniors, and single-parent households. At the same time, Canada discards over 11 million metric tonnes of edible food annually. The Food Security & Sustainability Program bridges this gap by rescuing surplus food and redistributing it through culturally sensitive, accessible channels. The program also integrates sustainability education, empowering families to grow, prepare, and store food with dignity and resilience.
By combining direct service delivery with long-term systems change, the Food Security & Sustainability Program aims to build a future where no family goes hungry and no food goes to waste. The program is rooted in the values of equity, community care, and environmental responsibility—aligned with Pamoja Elevate’s broader mission to elevate underserved communities through holistic support and empowerment.
Objectives
- Reduce Food Insecurity: Provide consistent access to nutritious, culturally appropriate food for low-income families, seniors, and vulnerable groups across Ontario and beyond.
- Minimize Food Waste: Partner with farms, grocers, and food suppliers to rescue surplus food and redirect it to community distribution hubs.
- Promote Sustainability Education: Equip families with knowledge and tools to grow, store, and prepare food sustainably through workshops, school programs, and community gardens.
- Strengthen Community Networks: Build a coalition of local organizations, volunteers, and businesses to support food redistribution, advocacy, and education.
